Signs and Preparation of Foaling
The mare's udder will enlarge about 5 weeks prior to foaling and her stomach will shift to a lower position toward the flanks. The teats will "wax up" anytime between 48 to 4 hours before birth.
Prepare the stall to be as clean as possible, free from drafts, and enclosed so the foal will not roll out and get away from the mare.
The mare will become restless, lying and getting up again, pawing the ground, sweating and biting at her sides, then finally lying down for foaling.
Her water will break and shortly the front hooves will pierce the membrane. Then the nose appears, followed quickly by the forelegs, head and shoulders.
Provided there are no problems, the process should take between 15-30 minutes.
When the foal is released from the mare, the umbilical cord and the placenta will rupture on it's own
when the foal stands. It is important to examine the placenta for any abnormalties. The foal should be able to stand and nurse within an hour. It is imperative the foal receive the mother's
first milk in order to provide antibodies. The umbilical cord should be dressed with antiseptic to prevent infection.
The foal will bond with the mother and start to take in all the sights and sounds of the new world. This is the imprinting period, where the foal responds to outside influences and learns how to react.

- It is best to clip when you and the horse are calm.
- Avoid feed and turnout times.
- The horse should be exercised and be in a clean and dry condition.
- Mark the edges of the clip with a piece of damp saddle soap, cattle marker or tailor's chalk.
- Put a tail bandage on and braid up the lower section of tail doubling up and fixing with an elastic band. This will keep all the tail hair away from the legs.
- Let the clippers run for a while to allow the horse to get used to the noise.
- Be firm and confident.
- Depending on the clip start on the shoulder, neck or gullet. If the horse is nervous, hold the clippers against him (without clipping) until he settles.
- Clip with firm, even pressure, against the lie of the coat, keep the tips of the blades against the skin.
- Go steadily and overlap each run by 50% for a neat, even finish.
- Get your helper to hold forelegs forward in order to stretch the skin in the girth area.
- Don't clip folds or wrinkles, you will cut the horse.
- Oil the blades liberally and regularly (every 5-10mins) throughout clipping.

- Grooming - The fine art of brushing the dirt from one's horse and applying it to your own body.
- Hay - A green itchy material that collects between layers of clothing, especially in unmentionable places.
- Head Tosser - A blonde-haired woman who wears fashion boots while working in the stables.
- Heaves - The act of unloading a truckful of hay.
- Hobbles - Describes the walking gait of a horse owner after his/her foot has been stepped on by his/her horse.
- Hock - The financial condition that a horse owner goes into.
- Hoof Pick - Useful, curbed metal tool utilized to remove hardened dog doo from the treads of your trainers.
- Horse shoes - Expensive semi-circular projectiles that horses like to throw.
- Inbreeding - The breeding results of broken/inadequate pasture fencing.
- Jumping - The characteristic movement that an equine makes when given a vaccine or has his hooves trimmed.
- Lameness - The condition of most riders after the first few rides each year; can be a chronic condition in weekend riders.
- Lead Rope - A long apparatus instrumental in the administration of rope burns. Also used by excited horses to take a handler for a drag.
- Lungeing - A training method a horse uses on its owner with the purpose of making the owner spin in circles-rendering the owner dizzy and light-headed so that they get sick and pass out, so the horse can go back to grazing.
- Mosquitoes - Radar equipped blood sucking insects that typically reach the size of small birds.
- Mustang - The type of horse your husband would gladly trade your favorite one for...preferably in a red convertible and V-8.
- Overreaching - A descriptive term used to explain the condition your credit cards are in by the end of show season.
- Parasites - Small children that get in your way when you work in the yard. Many gather in swarms at horse shows.
- Pinto - A colorful (usually green) coat pattern found on a freshly washed and sparkling clean grey horse that was left unattended in his stable for ten minutes.
- Pony - The true size of the stallion that you bred your mare to via transported semen-that was advertised as 15 hands tall.
- Poverty - Owning a horse.
- Proud Flesh - The external reproductive organs flaunted by a stallion when a horse of any gender is present. Often displayed in in-hand classes.
