Level Three Bits

Level One Horse:

  • Beginning training or little training.
  • Is learning basic gaits, transitions and obedience.

Level One Bits: Restrict the tongue.

  • Designed to communicate with the horse that has little or no training.
  • Feature curved mouthpiece for dispersed pressure and ease of swallow.
  • Use tongue pressure and bar pressure - working mostly off of the tongue. Myler Bits distribute tongue pressure more evenly than traditional designs.
  • Feature Pinch & Restrict with release - the bit collapses on the sides of the bars and comes down into the tongue. When the horse relaxes at the poll, the pressure is released. The horse learns to come into this "comfort zone."
  • May feature hooks and/or offer Independent Side Movement allowing the rider to isolate and lift one side of the bit.
  • May offer curb or poll pressure depending on cheek or shank design.

Level Two Horse:

  • Basic training is established.
  • Relaxes at the poll.
  • Possesses more complex skills such as bending, collection, and lead changes.

Level Two Bits: Work across the tongue.

  • Designed to communicate with the horse that has basic training and is now learning advanced skills.
  • Feature curved mouthpiece for dispersed pressure and ease of swallow.
  • Use tongue pressure and more bar pressure, with the mouthpiece rolling on the bars. Applies pressure across the tongue versus more in the center. Some Level Two Bits may collapse into the bars.
  • May offer curb and/or poll pressure depending on the cheek or shank design.
  • May feature hooks and/or offer Independent Side Movement allowing the rider to isolate and lift one side of the bit.

Level Two/Three Horse:

  • Basic training is established.
  • Relaxes at the poll.
  • Possesses more complex skills such as bending, collection, and lead changes.

Level Two/Three Bits: Offer some tongue relief.

  • Designed to communicate with the horse that has more complex skills, but is not considered fully-trained or finished.
  • Feature curved mouthpiece for dispersed pressure and ease of swallow. Ported mouthpiece offers some degree of tongue relief.
  • Offer a variety of pressure points. Use tongue pressure and more bar pressure, with the mouthpiece rolling on the bars. Some Level Two/Three Bits may collapse into the bars.
  • May offer palate pressure depending on port height.
  • May feature hooks and/or offer Independent Side Movement allowing the rider to isolate and lift one side of the bit.
  • May offer curb and/or poll pressure depending on the cheek or shank design.

Level Three Horse:

  • Considered finished; obeys all commands.
  • Relaxes at the poll.
  • Possesses advanced skills; works well off seat, legs and hands.

Level Three Bits: Offer the most tongue relief.

  • Designed to communicate with the highly reliable, finished horse.
  • Feature curved mouthpiece with tongue relief that allows horse to swallow.
  • Offer a variety of pressure points. Use tongue pressure and more bar pressure, with the mouthpiece rolling on the bars. Some Level Three Bits may collapse into the bars.
  • Offer a variety of pressure points to take the horse as soft as they will allow. Use mostly bar pressure, with the mouthpiece rolling downward on the bars.
  • May offer palate pressure depending on port height.
  • May use curb and/or poll pressure depending on the cheek or shank design.
  • May feature hooks and/or offer Independent Side Movement allowing the rider to isolate and lift one side of the bit.
